Living-Learning Communities

House Leader Openings

Apply to be a House Leader for fall 2018 and spring 2019.

Each floor on campus promotes academic success and offers programming tied to transition students as they move through their years at college. Living-Learning Communities go one step further in strengthening connections between students and faculty within a chosen course of study. These dynamic learning communities have some added benefits including:

  • Formal and informal out-of-class interaction with professors in your academic field.
  • Increased opportunity for career information, internships, and professional networking.
  • Access to special facilities and equipment in a supportive learning environment.
  • Educational programs that will enhance your classroom learning.
  • Social and cultural activities with students and faculty.

Each of our programs is unique and interesting. They are jointly sponsored by Housing and Residential Services and an academic unit of the university. There is at least one faculty advisor from each academic department or college affiliated with each floor. We encourage you to consider joining a Living-Learning Community! If you have questions about living in a Living-Learning Community, contact the Associate Director for Residential Education at 815-753-9605.

Joining a Living-Learning Community is easy. After being admitted to NIU and completing your Housing Agreement, you'll have a chance to choose a room in one of these communities during online room sign up. Some communities have eligibility requirements — check below to learn about any requirements you may need to meet before signing up. When you sign up for an LLC, a $50 LLC program fee is added to your room rate.

Academic Learning Communities are a type of Living-Learning Community that provide a unique opportunity for you to live and learn with other NIU students with common academic interests. Living in an Academic Learning Community allows you to connect to faculty, engage in hands-on learning experiences through field trips and career-related activities, and much more! Each Academic Learning Community requires you to be fully committed to participating in programming and learning opportunities throughout the year.
